Bird House Feeder

Putting up a bird house feeder in your backyard is going to make your garden a more colorful and interesting place. But it is important to know a little bit about bird house feeders before you hang one. Not just for the health and wellbeing of the birds but also to prevent any new and unwelcome guests visiting your backyard.

If you want to attract all species of bird to your backyard, then a platform bird house feeder is a nice idea. They will attract both large and small birds and you will see a nice variety of species enjoying your feeder. But you should take notice of falling feed. Falling feed is going to attract rodents and once a rodent population is established, it is very hard to get rid of.

To prevent rodents showing up in the first place, you should install a catch tray. Many models of bird house feeder actually come with a catch tray, but this is sometimes not large enough to catch all the feed. You may have to construct a larger catch tray, or have someone construct one for you. If you do use a catch tray, you should clean it out regularly because it will contain droppings and could possibly spread disease.

A platform bird house feeder, although attracting a range of species, does not really cater to the smaller birds. The smaller birds such as the finch will have to wait until the larger birds have eaten. It is a smart idea to install a tube feeder or a thistle seed feeder as well. These are going to provide for the smaller bird and also spill a lot less seed that the larger platform bird house feeder.
