of Birdhouses
Painting a birdhouse can be a great way to put your own personal stamp on a simple woodworking project. However, it is important to realize that birdhouse paint is not necessarily the same paint one would use for other applications. Furthermore, any paint that is used should only be applied to the outside of the enclosure, and not the inside.
The most important rule for any birdhouse paint is that it be non-toxic. This means it should be free of chemicals and substances like lead, as they can be extremely unhealthy to our feathered friends. Water-based paints are often the most highly recommended, but acrylic paints are often used as well. Most local hobby shops will have a paint that is appropriate for these projects.
Of course, birdhouse paint does more than simply make the birdhouse look pleasing to the eye. These paints are also used to protect the structure from the elements and can help them last much longer. Using a non-toxic sealer before painting can increase the birdhouse’s longevity even further. Again though, the inside of a birdhouse should remain in its natural state.
