Bird House Poles

Bird house poles not only serve the practical purpose of raising the bird house from the ground, they can also directly influence what type of species take up residence. For example, a bluebird house should be mounted 4-6 feet from the ground, where as a purple martin house should be mounted between 6-20 feet from the ground. You should understand your local species requirements before you mount your birdhouse on a pole.

It is also vital that you attach an squirrel/predator guard. Squirrels, snakes, raccoons and other predators will climb the bird house poles to try and eat the young and the eggs. These guards are often called squirrel bafflers. They are named so because they "baffle" the squirrel and prevent him from completing his task.

There are many different designs of bafflers ranging from a cylinder shape to a disk shape. The most effective bafflers are constructed from metal. If you buy a wood baffler, the persistent squirrel could eventually chew through the guard and succeed.

When you set your bird house poles into the ground, it is important that you place them at least 7 to 8 feet away from any structure that you think the predator could use to jump over from. You will also want to place the squirrel baffler at least 4 feet from the ground, but preferably directly below the bird house itself.
