Decorative Bird House

A decorative bird house can be a fun addition to your backyard and something more eye catching than a standard bird feeder. But you should still follow the general rules when buying a decorative bird house to ensure the safety and happiness of your new visitors.

You will want to look for a decorative bird house that has an overhanging roof and drainage holes to keep the nest dry. Not only will an overhanging roof keep the nest dry, it will also make it harder for predators to reach into the bird house from above.

Ventilation is also very important. Adequate ventilation will prevent overheating and damage to the nestlings. For the same reason, you should look for a decorative bird house that is a light color. White is the preferred color because it will keep the inhabitants nice and cool. Avoid bird houses that are painted black or a dark color.

Also look for a decorative bird house that has easy access. You will want to clean out the nest in between seasons. If a new nest is built on top of an old one, this could spread disease.

The traditional decorative bird house has a perch outside of the entrance hole. This is not recommended with most bird houses. It gives potential predators a place to rest and easier access into the birdhouse. If at all possible, buy a decorative bird house without a perch.

As with all bird houses, you should look for one that has the appropriate entrance hole size and space for your expected species.
