If you do not, then you will have to wash the gourd in a solution of bleach and water to protect it from mould and rot.

If you plan on making your own gourd bird house, you will need to cut an entrance hole. It is important to note that the size of the hole you make will influence what type of species you can expect to visit. You should research what type of birds visit your area as well as the recommended hole size for said birds.

You will need to use a serrated knife to break up the interior of the gourd and make sure it is suitable for a bird to nest in. You will also need to drill holes into the base to provide drainage.

After these steps, it is now possible to decorate and finish your gourd bird house. You can sand the gourd, and then apply a primer, followed by enamel paint. It is a good idea to use white paint to keep the interior of your gourd bird house cool for its inhabitants. After that you and your family can paint the gourd anyway you please.
