Hanging Bird Feeders

Hanging bird feeders are best placed in a sheltered southeasterly location. This is because birds like to feed out of the wind and in the sunlight. You will also want to have the feeding area free from obstruction. Birds like to see well ahead of time when a predator approaches.

When you first put up your hanging bird feeders, you may have to wait several weeks before the birds start to feed from it. A good tip is to have a shinny surface underneath the feeder with some seed in it. This will reflect the light and attract the bird's attention. Another way to naturally attract a bird is to have the shinny surface full of water.

Make sure your hanging bird feeders are away from bushes, tress or anything else a squirrel could use to jump onto the feeder. If you have no where else to hang a feeder but a tree, make sure it is at least 6 feet away from the trunk.

If you want to attract hummingbirds, you will want your hanging bird feeders to be out of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can ruin the nectar that hummingbirds feed upon. Placing the hummingbird feeder near blooming flowers as well, this will attract more birds.

You may want to hang some line from two trees. If you do, make sure that your hanging bird feeders are at least six feet away from the trees. Fishing line is recommended, as it is slippery and very hard for squirrels to climb.
