A hummingbird will not live in a traditional bird house. They build delicate nests that are made from spider's webs and plant down and are usually only 1 inch in diameter. If you want to attract these magical birds into your backyard the best type of hummingbird bird house you can put out is a platform for their nest in a suitable habitat.

The best habitat for this platform should be somewhere that has a wide variety or flowers, shrubs and trees. A great way to draw the delicate hummingbird to your garden is to put out a hummingbird feeder. This feeder will be full of sugar water and flower nectar. This cocktail is irresistible to the hummingbird. It serves as the vital fuel that they need to hunt for their main meal.

A man made hummingbird bird house will not work. Hummingbirds are fiercely independent and prefer to build their own nest. The best thing you can do for the hummingbird is to monitor the nest. Cats and crows may try to attack and although you will not be able to provide man made protection, you can carefully watch the nest and hopefully intercept any invasion.
