of Metal Birdhouses.
Metal birdhouses are extremely durable, but you must be careful with sun placement. Metal is a much better conductor than wood, which is an insulating material. This is true for electricity, but more importantly it is true for heat as well. This is circumvented in human construction by insulation.
The reason for insulating metal birdhouses is because metal will expose birds to a greater range of temperatures than wood. In the hot summer days, a metal house will get hotter than a correspondingly placed wood one. Conversely, in early spring and late fall, a metal birdhouse will cool off more overnight than a wooden one will. This is the tradeoff metal has for being so much more durable than wood.
One option is to use insulated metal birdhouses. Fiberglass, which is the primary insulating material for human homes is a poor solution for birds, because it is prone to splintering. If you do use fiberglass insulation, you will need to build an inner and outer shell for the birdhouse to protect the birds from the insulation.
