of Recycled Bird Houses.
If you are looking for rustic and attractive accommodation for the nesting birds in your area, you should consider building or buying recycled bird houses. If you want to buy a ready made house, then you can expect them to be made out of recovered barn wood, drift wood and any number of materials.
The great thing about recycled bird houses is that the wood will be appropriately aged and strong. Also it will not be a drain on any existing resources. There is plenty of perfectly good wood out there that can be used to make quality bird houses without having to chop down any fresh trees.
Recycled bird houses also make a great project for you and your family. But you need to be aware of what the birds prefer in a house. For example, bluebirds prefer a nest that is raised six feet from the ground with an entrance hole that is 1.5 inches in diameter. Knowing the types of birds that are native to your area and what type of house they like is going to greatly increase your chances of attracting the wildlife.
You should always do your best to make your recycled bird houses hard for predators to invade. If you are going to build your own bird house build one without a perch. Birds do not need them and they are only an advantage for predators. For the same reason, you should mount your homemade bird house on a PVC pole with a guard on top. This is going to make it much harder for cats, squirrels and raccoons to climb the pole and reach into the bird house.
