Unique Birdhouses

Unique birdhouses can help transform your plain old backyard into a magical avian playground. But for all the fun a cupcake shaped birdhouse may be, you still need to consider the health and safety of its occupants.

The avian community is a fragile hierarchy and has been this way for a very long time. The larger birds eat first, drink first and nest first. Basically, the smaller birds need our help. The best way to ensure your unique birdhouses provide a nesting space for the smaller birds is to buy a birdhouse with the appropriate sized hole.

Buying a birdhouse with a smaller hole will make it harder for the larger, more aggressive birds to nest there and harder for predators to invade. If you are expecting purple martins and want to avoid the invasion of the hostile European starling, you should buy unique birdhouses that have crescent shaped entrance holes.

If you want to provide a place for a wren to nest, you should know that these are one of the few species of bird that actually enjoy a hanging birdhouse. So you can buy unique birdhouses that can hang like lanterns. Whatever birdhouse you buy, try to make sure that it is easily accessible for you to clean. If you cannot get inside the birdhouse to clean out the nest at the end of the nesting season, this could lead to the spread of disease when the birds return the following year.
