Winter Bird Feeders

Birds need our help in the winter months and it is important that we put out winter bird feeders. To help every possible species fed, winter bird feeders need to be full of a variety of food and also set at different heights from the ground. When winter comes around, birds will eat seed, this is simply due to necessity. Insects are very hard to find. It is important that you know what species of bird like what type of seed.

If you fill winter bird feeders with sunflower seeds, you will attract cardinals, purple finches, blue jays and woodpeckers. Buy the black sunflower seeds, they have higher oil content and are also cheaper. You should place your sunflower seeds in hanging winter bird feeders. This way you will keep away squirrels and raccoons.

Birds love suet. It is a solid fat that comes from venison and beef. Suet will also attract woodpeckers. You can buy suet cakes from most markets and pet stores and it is very cheap to buy. Again, hang the suet, so only the birds can enjoy it.

Do not fill your winter bird feeders with mixed birdseed. This is usually full of filler such as red millet. Birds will not eat this and it will go to waste. Instead buy the seeds that you know the birds will want to eat. This will save you money and guarantee you have happy eaters. When you first hang winter bird feeders it may take a while for the birds to come. But be patient. Keep the feeders full and eventually they will start to arrive and enjoy your winter bird feeders.
